New round of taxes must be opposed

Dear sir- In your edition of 24th December 2011 you refer to a statement by Fine Gael Councillor Jim Holloway referring to elected members of Dail Eireann as subversive because of their principled opposition to the introduction of home/household tax. The councillor's outburst is headline grabbing but never the less very disappointing to say the least and must be seen for exactly what it is - nothing more than a cynical attempt to convince ordinary householders that this imposition of a further round of new taxes on a phased basis is somehow completely acceptable and right. It is nothing more than an attempt to increase the unjust tax take from an already overstretched population and make it seem like it's the only proper thing to do. The FG councillor attempts to denigrate the courageous and honest stance being taken by a number of elected TDs who decided not to betray the Irish electorate since the last general election. The subversion which should be spoken of is the subversion of the will of the people - the continued subversion of the democratic process by the usual political suspects seeking election, offering one attractive set of proposals to the electorate before an election and then afterwards blatantly imposing an entirely different agenda on the population. What a pity there is no evidence of any condemnation by the same councillor of the subversive activities of the banking/developer/political elites of the country who brought us into this financial mess in the first place. Those who plunged us all into this ongoing financial nightmare are now on the sidelines and rightly so, they are no doubt busy planning the return as if none of the mess was in any way their doing - it just happened. They (FF/Greens/PD) have been replaced with FG/Labour - the guardians of fiscal rectitude - eager types who want to put it all to rights before the next election. They regularly say that they don't really want to have to do it, It's the IMF/ECB/the previous government, yet they exude and air of well padded indifference to the plight of struggling families never before seen in this country. The supporting hand of the once proud Labour Party in the continuing sickening assault on the limited incomes of working families, the unemployed, single parents, pensioners, the sick, students, drivers and all other sections of our society is a really disgusting spectacle. They have failed the people who supported them. Many Labour Party supporters are decent people but many are engaged at toeing the party line hoping that things will get better. On the evidence to date, it won't. Sadly Labour has once again become the facilitator of the fiscal correction wolves of Fine Gael, holding the gates open for them to savagely tear into the limited incomes of struggling famillies. Of course some, have secure state pensions plus three or four other sources of income, their only objective now is to protect their party, while the well paid government/political party PR consultants set about to mesmerise and confuse the people, to convince them through fear to accept as normal and pay the enormously unjust bill left behind by Irish and foreign speculators are bankers who gambled and lost and are now walking away with a smile on their well tanned faces, knowing full well the Irish taxpayer will be forced to cover their gambling losses. The new round of home/water/sewerage tax must and will be opposed. We are already paying for all these services through our high taxes. We fought the implementation of the service charges in the past and we succeeded in having them abolished after many years of bitter struggle at local and national level with the establishment political parties. It is obvious to all that are not responsible for this enormous debt which is being foisted upon us and our children. We pay more than our fair share as it is. We must not willingly accept responsibility for the speculators failure and their role in the country's financial ruination. It was Government who cravenly allowed the country to financially implode because of incompetent lack of financial regulation, favoured treatment of the rich and powerful and of course politicians filling out their own very large pay cheques. I fully intend to oppose the new phase of service taxes on home/water/sewerage and I know of many, many more like me who are committed to mass opposition to the new taxes. The Fine Gael/Labour policy appears to be 'you pay more, you get less'. Our policy must be 'can't pay - won't pay'. Yours, Christopher Gorman, Navan.
