Meath open with a win

Meath manager Seamus McEnaney got his 2012 campaign off to a winning start when the Royals won the first round O'Byrne Cup clash with Wexford in front of about 2,000 spectators at Navan's Pairc Tailteann today. Selectors Graham Geraghty was absent, but Louth manager Peter Fitzpartrick was there to look at the team his side will play at the same venue next Sunday in the quarter-final. Gerry Cooney's Offaly led from start to finish against neighbours Westmeath at Tullamore to win by 3-6 to 0-7. Dublin and Kildare also won. Dublin defeated Carlow by 0-17 to 0-10 at Dr Cullen Park and Kildare defeated DIT at Newbridge by 2-11 to 0-9. DCU took the spoils at Baltinglass as Harry Murphy's reign at the Wicklow helm began with a narrow 0-18 to 1-14 defeat. Longford beat Athlone IT by 0-13 to 0-9 and UCD sent Laois crashing out at Crettyard by 0-15 to 0-11.
