Invitation to Castletown 1798 ceremony

Dear sir, This is a note to inform you that Comoradh Riocht Na Mhi, in association with the Castletown Tidy Towns committee are proud to announce the re-dedication of the 1798 monument at Mullins Cross, Castletown on Sunday 16th October. This commemoration will begin with Sunday Mass at 11.30am in Castletown parish church and will be preceded by a march to the monument at Mullen's cross. Our Guests of honour on the day will be the Wexford Carrigbyrne Pike group and Choir and Mr Eamon Doyle, author of the 'March into Meath', the brilliant book which traced the route taken by the Wexford rebel army during the summer of 1798 from the battle of Vinegar Hill to their final stand at Ballyboughal, County Dublin. This 1798 monument stood proudly at Mullen's Cross since it unveiling in 1952, marking the site of the Battle of Knightstown bog in July 1798 and it is dedicated to the memory of the members of the brave Wexford army who gave their lives in that bog in a fight for liberty, equality and fraternity during the United Irishmen's rebellion of 1798. Unfortunately this monument became a victim of last winters bad weather as it was badly damaged in road traffic collision but I am now proud to say with the help of the community it is now restored to it former glory as one of the finest 1798 monuments in County Meath. This commemoration is an non-political event and all are invited to attend. Yours, Paddy Pryle, Chairman, Comoradh Riocht Na Mhi.
