Leinster Junior Cup win for Trim golf team
Co Meath Golf Club members were celebrating at the weekend following the arrival of the Leinster Junior Cup at the well-appointed Trim clubhouse on Sunday evening. The team of David Fox, Sean Fitzgerald, Ciaran Blaney, Tony Lacey, Michael Gaynor, Dave Roberts and Martin Murray claimed provincial honours on Sunday against Kilcoole at Greenore Golf Club. "It was an absolutely super victory for the club. This is the biggest competition that we have ever won. We have now won two provincial towns pennants, but this is the biggest and it sends us into the All-Ireland finals now," club president Donie Mooney told the Meath Chronicle. The Trim club became the first side from Meath to lift the old trophy when they defeated Kilcoole 4-1 in the decider. The competition is for five handicappers and the team, which is jointly-managed by Paddy Kelly and Jonathon Cooney, secured their place in the final with victory in the qualifying rounds during May and they took full advantage of their final spot by sailing to victory with several overwhelming displays. The Co Meath club hosted one of the provincial qualifying rounds in May and topped the field with a superb total of 318 to finish just two shots clear of Dundalk in second place. They were four shots ahead of Greenore in third and six clear of Balbriggan in fourth. Other Meath clubs that competed included Headfort, Ashbourne, Royal Tara, Laytown & Betteystown, Bellewstown, Black Bush, Glebe and Navan. Co Meath defeated Balbriggan 3/2 In the qualifying semi-finals while Greenore accounted for Dundalk 4/1 to set up a Meath v Louth showdown in the final, which the Royal County club shaded on a 3/2 scoreline to book their place in the provincial finals which were held at Greenore. The Leinster Junior Cup finals got underway on Saturday with all the regional winners and the winners of the Metropolitan section joing Co Meath for a glorious weekend of golfing action. Co Meath took on Kilkenny club Castlecomer in the quarter-finals, who had emerged from their home qualifying round with victory over Co Carlow. It proved to be a major test for the Co Meath club, but once again they held their nerve to claim a 3.5/1.5 victory and a place in the last four. Lying in wait in the semi-finals were Corrstown from north Dublin. They had defeated Clontarf in their qualifying final and saw off Newlands 3/2 in the quarter-final, but they were no match for a Co Meath side that coasted to a 3/2 win. In the final the Trim club took on Enniscorthy GC regional qualifiers, Kilcoole. The Wicklow club had defeated Borris in their regional qualifier and made their way to the provincial final with victories over Tullamore and Elm Park, but they to found Co Meath too hot to handle as the Meath side claimed the title with a stunning 4/1 victory.
