World record bid at Navan RFC

Pink will be the colour of the day at Balreask Old, home of AIL Div 3 side Navan, next Saturday for the final home game of the season. Providing the opposition will be Dublin side Suttonians with a 2-30 kick-off for the main action in the AIL Div 3, however, there will also be a number of other events in the club's annual Pink Day in aid of breast cancer, funds raised will benefit the Irish Cancer Society. The Navan players will wear specially commissioned pink jerseys which will be auctioned after the game, this event has raised over €30,000 in the last three years. The Navan u-7 team will play Suttonians in an exhibition game before the AIL action and the Leinster Branch president is also expected to attend. There is also a possibility that Alan Quinlan will be there to do a book signing and this will be confirmed later this week by the club. The activities will kick-off at midday with an official Guinness world record-breaking attempt for the most consecutive rugby passes. The record currently stands at a massive 279 passes and according to Navan RFC president Michael Gavigan, there is a positive mood around Balreask Old that the record will be broken. "The Navan v Suttonians game will kick-off at 2.30 and that will keep the serious rugby fans entertained," the club president told the Meath Chronicle. However, an anonymous source, close to the club, suggested that there was a good chance that the record for consecutive passes would be broken as none of the first team would be involved? Navan RFC mini-rugby and youth players will be going for the world record attempt. The world record for the most consecutive rugby passes is held by a Welsh Club - Newport Gwent Dragons - and currently stands at 279 passes. Saturday's world record attempt will be the first by an Irish rugby club and will be scrutinised by officials from Guinness World Records. Anyone who wishes to be part of this historic event can register from noon at Navan RFC by making a voluntary contribution to Breast Cancer Awareness. Registration can also be made in advance on line at navanworldrecord.eventbrite.com Sponsors Lir Chocolates and Heineken are covering event costs. Lir Chocolates have donated rugby ball-shaped chocolate eggs and a monster egg for a raffle. According to the club, everyone is welcome to attend, even if they have never attended a rugby game before, what promises to be a truly memorable day. There will also be a barbecue, bouncy castles, face painting and a giant Lir Chocolate egg raffle!
