Bus commuters get shelter from elements

The new bus shelter at Market Square in Navan has been warmly welcomed as a major boost for commuters. The shelter was lowered into place recently and traffic was diverted from Market Square to facilitate the specialised crane which carried out the work. Cllr Tommy Reilly said that shelter, which is located at the bottom of Metges Lane, will provide a bit of comfort for commuters who use the town centre bus stop, some of whom are waiting there at 6am each morning. The bus stop forms part of the overall Market Square remedial work, which is currently nearing completion. Cllr Reilly, whose newsagents' shop has often been used by commuters as a bus shelter, said the new facility was a start, but ultimately, there should be a proper bus station in Navan. Cllr Shane Cassells said the new shelter was very timely with the onset of recent bad weather. “For too many years, people have boarded buses wearing wet clothes, having been exposed to the elements while waiting at Market Square,†he said. “Speaking from personal experience, it was bad enough that services were delayed or that buses arrived already full, without being soaked from the rain to add to your frustration. It is fantastic that the shelter has been put in place for those waiting for the bus and a shelter at the taxi rank has also been installed on the far side of the road. “For me, the construction of a proper shelter for commuters was a key part of the overall design of the square. It will be a welcome addition,†he added.
