Chris O’Connor believes Seamus McEnaney would be the ideal choice to lead Meath in next year’s campaign.

Meath players would support appointment of McEnaney

Meath defender Chris O’Connor says the players are fully behind the appointment of Seamus McEnaney as the next team manager. Speaking after his side had side-stepped the challenge of Thomastown in the Leinster Club JFC at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday O’Connor suggested that the appointment of the Monaghan man would represent a step in the right direction. “I think it would be great if he was appointed, he would be something different, but the clubs have to decide on Wednesday night,” he told the Meath Chronicle. “We’ve seen what he has done with Monaghan and I think he would do a good job with us, he has a good backroom staff and he would bring something fresh to the whole set up and we look forward to having him there.” O’Connor feels that the experience McEnaney and his management team gained in Ulster football could add an extra fizz to an unusual cocktail. “There would be an northern aspect to his management, but it would be interesting to see how it would work with us. “He mightn’t have won anything major with Monaghan, but he has a good pedigree, he brought them from a low point to an Ulster final last year. “Ultimately he didn’t win anything, but maybe he could lead us to more than a Leinster next year.” The Ballinabrackey player, who put in a superb display on Saturday especially in the second-half, feels that the process of appointing a manager has gone on long enough and now Meath players need to get their winter weights programme sorted out and underway. Before all that Ballinabrackey have plenty of football to play with an A FL Div 4 final looming this Sunday followed by the semi-final of the Leinster JFC the week after that. His team achieved their primary objective on Saturday and won their way to the next stage of the Leinster JFC. O’Connor admitted there were aspects of the team’s display that will need to be fine-tuned if any silverware is to be landed. “The first-half today was pretty bad. We kicked-off in the second-half and while we’re not too happy with that performance we got a win and that’s the most important thing,” he said. For O’Connor and his colleagues the important thing is that they are still involved. Still on the course for the big prize.
