Navan residents lose lives in collision near Longwood

The two Lithuanian men killed in a two car collision close to Longwood last week had been living in Navan. Arturas Janusonis (43) of Woodlands, Trim Road, Navan, and Petras Statkus (54) of Birch Drive, Johnstown, were both fatally injured in the collision at Ballinakill, Broadford, on Thursday evening of last week. The collision occurred at Lally's Cross, Ballinakill, on the Longwood-Clonard Road, approximately three kilometres from Longwood, at 8.15pm. It is understood that the two men had been travelling from Galway to their homes in Navan at the time of the accident. Arturas Janusonis and Petras Statkus were in one car and both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were removed to the mortuary at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan. There were three people travelling in the other vehicle including a male, female and a one year old child who were taken to Tallaght Hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening. The scene was immediately sealed off by gardai. A Fiat Punto and a Skoda, were removed for examination. Gardai in Leixlip are investigating the circumstances of the collision. Witnesses who may have been in the area between 8pm-8.30pm are asked to contact the Gardai in Leixlip on (01) 666 7800 or the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111. The Funeral Mass for Mr Statkus, who had been living in Navan with his son, takes place this morning (Wednesday) in St Mary's Church, Navan, at 10am, followed by cremation in Glasnevin Crematorium. At the time of going to press, the Funeral arrangements for Mr Janusonis were not known. A male motorcyclist received serious injuries following a collision at the Johnstown Roundabout on the Enfield Bypass yesterday (Tuesday) morning. The motorcycle was in collision with a white Volvo truck at approximately 7.05am. The motorcyclist, who is in his thirties, was taken to Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown, with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The road was closed for approximately two hours and diversions were in place.
