Meath athletes prominent at Athlone

Excellent performances from Mark Hanily, Barry Kirwan, Barry Delany and Kourosh Foroughi helped Meath retain their Premier status in the second round of the National Athletics League which was held at Athlone IT on Sunday. The men's and women's teams were in action and both were looking to qualify for the finals next month. Both Meath teams finished in sixth place with the men's team scoring 87 points and the women's team getting 63. On the track, Bohermeen's Darragh Rennicks put in a brave and gutsy performance in the 800m. He ran a very mature race finishing second to Andrew Connick, one of the top two-lap runners in the country. Grainne Miggin from Fr Murphy AC was the stand-out performer on the women's team taking second place in the hammer with a throw of 35.96m. The event kicked-off with a series of low key fun runs for under-age boys and girls. Some of the leading road runners in the county took part in the 5km adult run at low tide along a course between the mouth of the Delvin river which forms the county boundary with Dublin and the point of Ben Head near the aerodrome. In the men's race the first three finishers were Paddy Mangan, Dunshaughlin, Gerard Heery, St Brigids and Sean Murphy, Trim. The women were led home by local athlete Orla Timmons followed by Linda Fahey, Dunshaughlin and Linda Gunning, Bohermeen. In the junior ranks there were good performances from Gavin Maher, Dunshaughlin and Rachel Neary, Na Fianna.
