Apology owed to Louth

Dear sir - I am writing to convey my absolute abhorrence at the decision by the Meath board and players not to arrange for a replay against Louth in the Leinster final. I, like many others find their decision beyond belief. As a sportsman myself, I ask how could Meath justify 'winning' the trophy in that manner?? Would they not want to set the record straight and go hammer and tongs against Louth in a replay to show if they have the much hyped ability their meant to have? You can argue all day on the 'pressure' put on Meath, but for me I wouldn't want a title won that way, albeit through referee Sludden and not anything Meath had done themselves with the exception of Joe Sheridan. I'm calling on Joe Sheridan to offer a full and heartfelt apology to the people of Louth. His describing his goal as a 'perfect goal' has added salt to the gaping wound and he should hang his head in shame. In addition, the morons who roughed up Martin Sludden should hang their heads in shame. Sludden bottled it, pure and simple. The archaic mindset of possibly playing for a draw match and lining the pockets of the GAA must have consumed his mind near the end, as how else could he give a free kick against Eamon McAuley? He was then totally thrown by the unfolding events in the Louth penalty box. Referees need to be tough and take a gutsy approach with 50,000 fans roaring in your ear, take a moment to compose yourself, consult all relevant persons, ie the umpires. There are plenty of decent people in Meath who brokered for the only fair outcome, a replay, but this was snatched from their grasp, Louth's grasp, Ireland's grasp by a few hardliners that belligerently opposed doing the right thing. But what goes around comes around, like France's capitulation in the World Cup. The Louth guys have done their county proud, I was never prouder of a Louth team in all my life but now we need to regroup and look to the qualifiers, if we play like we did against Meath in the second half, the counties of Ireland should watch out. Yours, Anthony Gregory, Drogheda.
