Greyhound settles for second as 'The Crow' flies in fundraising event

Kilmessan is well-known for producing good hurlers and top-quality greyhounds, but the real test came at Dundalk Greyhound Racing Stadium when local hurler Kevin Keena was sent out against a dog to see who was the fastest! The much-hyped battle of 'The Crow', as the hurler is known, versus the dog, formed the centrepiece of a fundraising Kilmessan parish 'fun night out' at the Louth stadium. Kilmessan hurling and camogie clubs are fundraising to resurface the car parking area at their new astro-turf facility at Ringlestown, and combined a night of dog racing with a meal and music to do so. Naturally, Kevin got a head start on the greyhound, Jimmy Slevin's Belesker Joey, but he still finished first past the post, even beating the hare. The racetrack says that Kevin got too much of a head start! But all enjoyed the spectacle which was sponsored by Tattersalls Ireland and Gain Foods. There were 11 races on the card, with prizes sponsored by John Thornes, Ken Reilly Motors, Michael Maguire of Tara, Ground Force, Dunsany; Hunky Dorys, Ger and Lynn Lyons, Pat Fox, Bective; Nigel Conlon Taxi and Alan Clarke Motors, Ray Gorman and Pat Curtis, Cathal Duffy and racehorse trainer Gordon Elliott. There was even some local success with Georgina Horan's Curtistown Pride and Rita Carberry's Kilmessan Beauty winning their respective races.
