Victories for Kentstown and Yellow Furze

Kentstown girls won the inaugural Kiera Duncan Memorial Cup for the Meath Primary Schools Olympic Handball Premier League at Claremont Stadium, Navan on Thursday. The trophy was presented by the late Kiera Duncan's mother, Audrey, and for the first year of the competition the cup which the Meath u-16 girls won when they competed in a tournament in Malta in 2003 was presented. The late Kiera Duncan was a member of that Meath team. She was also a former pupil at Kentstown and the girls made a determined effort to win the trophy this year. Last week they recorded a 10-6 victory over Carnaross who were appearing in the premier decider for the first time after some excellent performances in the qualifying rounds. Yellow Furze boys won the Kyle Gavigan Memorial Cup for the first time when they defeated St Paul's, Navan by 8-7 while the boys from St Joseph's, Navan won the Div 1 trophy. GIRLS Kentstown 10 Carnaross 6 Roisin Commons and Jamie O'Meara scored five goals apiece as Kentstown won the Premier League title for the Kiera Duncan Memorial Cup. Carnaross kpet battling and got back into contention after a poor start, but they were unable to close the gap sufficiently. Daire Creavin was the top scorer for St Paul's, but he was edged out by Conor Hand for Yellow Furze who grabbed the winning goal in the final minute to take the Kyle Gavigan Memorial Cup to the school for the first time.
