Woman robbed by gunmen in Athboy

Gardai are investigating an armed robbery which took place in Athboy on Monday morning outside a public house in the town. Two men, apparently armed with handguns, approached a lady leaving Daly's Bar on Bridge Street just after 8.45am. The incident occurred in the rear car park, close to the Newman's Mill apartment block, where the woman was parked. She was carrying a briefcase and a handbag, and was in possession of a sum of cash from the pub's takings. The victim abandoned the case containing the cash and cheques, and the handbag, and ran to Bridge Street, where the Garda station is located next door, to get help. The handbag was later recovered near the scene but the money has yet to be recovered. The culprits were masked with hats and scarves and were described as having slight builds and were around 5'6" to 5'9" in height, with no discernable accents. Gardai are currently reviewing closed circuit television (CCTV) footage of the area in a bid to advance their investigation. The car used by the armed men is believed to have been a dark or navy blue Peugeot 406 and Gardai are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen this vehicle to contact them at Athboy Garda Station on (046) 9432201 or Kells Gardai on (046) 9240999.
