Kells looks set to get natural gas pipeline

The prospect of the natural gas network coming to Kells has moved a step closer to reality with the news that Bord Gais has sought approval for the project from the Energy Regulator. A review was carried out by Bord Gais in the area recently and, if the company receive approval, works on a new gas pipeline to the north Meath town could begin as early as next year. Deputy Shane McEntee welcomed the news that the gas pipeline may finally be coming to Kells. "Together with the opening of the M3 in the near future, I see this as potentially a great boost for householders and businesses in the town - this makes Kells a far greater prospect for future investers in the region," he said. Cllr Oliver Sweeney added: "I have been following this issue with interest for many years now. I enquired at the time when gas arrived in Navan and Trim, if it would also come to Kells. At the time, it was deemed that there was not enough industry or population in Kells to make it worthwhile. "This latest review of the area has obviously proven otherwise. This news is very welcome. I hope it will create jobs and a boost for the local economy. This will provide greater choice for householders which, in turn, could lead to lower costs," said Cllr Sweeney.
