Rich history of Kells on display in town

The rich social history of Kells was highlighted at an exhibition of old photographs in Carrick Street last week. Featuring many images of immense local interest, the display, 'Window To The Past', was produced by members of Kells Social History Group (KSHG) which has produced many such exhibitions in the past. Last week's window display was created to celebrate National Heritage Week and featured a selection from the extensive collection of the KSHG. Photos in the exhibition dated back to 1890 and letterheads from old Kells companies such as Knox Watchmakers, dating back to 1862, are included in the KSHG collection. Chairperson Avril Gillic, along with her son Jack, have been collection historic photographs and documents for some time. "I go to antique fairs and if I see anything relating to Kells, I do my best to acquire it," she said. Mrs Gillic expressed the organisation's gratitude to Damian McLoughlin, the local businessman who donated the venue in Carrick Street for last week's exhibition. Keirnan Dunne, president of KSHG, said he eagerly anticipates further exhibitions in the near future.
