Cosmos held in scoreless draw

Navan Cosmos failed to take advantage of their numerical supremacy as they were held to a draw by Marsh Celtic in their Meath & District League Div 1 encounter on Sunday. The Drogheda visitors were reduced to 10 men after just 30 minutes and Navan Cosmos slowly raised the tempo, but they couldn't find a way past the inspired visiting goalkeeper. Ivan Reilly spurned two chances while Muredach McAndrew and Laurence Ivers also went close. With time running out Joe Martin saw his goalbound header come back off the crossbar and away to safety. Ross Clarke restored partity almost immedtaley before goals from Joey Rogers and Andy Kearney boosted the Meath men to a 3-1 lead. Square narrowed the deficit again, but Kearney grabbed his second to give OMP a 4-2 interval lead. Substitute Eanna Donoghue put the issue beyond doubt with his side's fifth before Kevin Mallon netted a sixth for the Navan men. Smith was upended for the hosts penalty which Rennicks cooly despatched to the net and with Smith adding a second and Conor Gilsenan making some outstanding saves Kells / Blackwater held on for a deserved victory. Square 0 Navan Town 3 Navan Town inflicted the first of two Kilmessan Shield defeats by Meath teams on Square as goals from Keith Russell and Colin Smyth gave them a two-goal interval lead and a third strike from Adrian Dowdall sealed the win. It was a tight affair with both defences dominating in the early stages. Knightsbrook began to take charge of proceedings midway through the first-half, with some fine link up play between James Curran and David Gibney. Knightsbrook were rewarded for thier dominance when Tyndall finished from close range. Few clear-cut chances were created during the game, however John Prendergast pulled off some fine saves in the Trim Town goal, in particular from a spectacular long range effort from Anthony Craig. The away side found themselves one down after 10 minutes following a superb strike and had to fight hard to get a hold in the contest. After 25 minutes Boca were level through Stewart Garry from a Mark Jacob centre. From there on in it was one-way traffic as Boca notched up four more goals. Ciaran Rogers led the way with a brace, followed by one each from Gerry Haughton and Aidan Farrelly. Best in an excellent team display for the winners were Willie Tormey, John Callaghan, Larry Smyth and Ciaran Rogers.
