Slane by-pass must be a priority

Dear Sir - I write in the aftermath of the horrific accident which occurred in the centre of Slane on Monday the 23rd March. Were it not for a miraculous chain of events, there would have undoubtedly been multiple loss of life. This incident again brings Slane residents back to the dangers that their historic and scenic bridge poses to their everyday lives. The campaign for a by-pass of Slane cannot possibly be furthered by this letter, as all avenues of representation have long been exhausted. What this incident fully emphasises is that the proposed by-pass must now be prioritised as a life-saving measure. The accident on Monday made national headlines because it was obvious that there could have been a real human tragedy. However, accidents are happening on a regular basis that are not registering in either the local or national media. It is imperative that Slane get a by-pass but prior to that a weight restriction must be put in place to keep heavy goods vehicles away from the village. Yours, Wayne Harding, Secretary Slane Community Forum.
