Persistent gas smell in Enfield

Enfield county councillor William Carey has said that unless Meath County Council finds a solution to a gas smell in the town soon, he will be reporting the problem to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of the Environment. Cllr Carey said there has been a persistent smell of gas from the centre of Enfield out to Johnstownbridge for the past few months and he has received numerous complaints from residents about the odours. 'Some mornings the smell can be quite bad and, if you take a breath of air, it goes right to your stomach and can be sickening. There is a smell where there is no gas main. All fingers are pointing that it may be a leakage out of the sewerage main. It is unbearable and is going on too long,' he said. Cllr Carey said he has complained to Meath County Council, which said it is investigating the problem but said the council has not come back with any solution. 'If this is not fixed soon, I am going to have to go to the EPA and the Department of the Environment. It is bad and wrong and should not be happening. I have had lots of complaints, and rightly so,' he said. Cllr Carey said the smell extends from the centre of the village to Johnstownbridge and that the odour is blowing up to a half a mile away from the sewerage main.
