Ferguson captains Ireland to victory against England

Coláiste na hInse, Laytown student Ellie Ferguson captained the Republic of Ireland schools to a fantastic 2-1 victory against England at the AUL in Dublin on Sunday as they claimed the John Read Cup for the first time with goals in each half from Zara Foley and Sophie Liston who hit the winner on the stroke of full-time.

Ferguson played a key role on Sunday in what was a tight encounter that seemed destined for penalties after Jess Brown’s equaliser for England six minutes from time

The Irish girls settled into the game following a frantic first 15 minutes which saw a spell of possession for the hosts with Foley hitting the target in the 23rd minute.

The Irish continued their attacking strategy in the second-half, but England got in for an equaliser and were stunned when the hosts hit that late winner.
