Late points from Fitzgerald and Mullen sets Royals up for Down

Late points from Evan Fitzgerald and Mikey Mullen helped Meath secure a 2-15 to 2-12 victory over Kildare in the All-Ireland B MHC semi-final at Trim yesterday. Now the young Royals will take on Down in the final with date and venue to be confirmed although it's expected to be next Saturday.

Nick Fitzgerald's side had a stiff breeze at their backs for the opening half and they led 2-10 to 0-4 at the interval with the help of goals from Mullen and Brian Dowling.

However they had to withstand a storming second-half revival from Kildare who got within a point of the home side with 60 minutes played but late scores from Evan Fitzgerald and Mullen helped Meath across the line. Mullen finished with 1-7, four from frees.

Nikey Potterton and Daire Gilmartin were others to loft over crucial points for Meath in the topsy turvy second-half.

Meath's victory also had a lot to do with defensive fortitude as they held a lively Kildare attack at bay with the Lilywhites shooting nine wides in the second-half compared to just three from Meath.
