Master McGrath in search of FAI Cup glory

The opportunity to appear in an FAI Cup final presents itself for young Athboy footballer Jamie McGrath on Sunday when his side, St Patrick's Athletic,  take on Cork City at Richmond Park, coverage on RTE 2 TV starting at 3.55.

McGrath has established himself as a regular on the St Patrick's Athletic team this season and is now one step away from appearing in what is the biggest day in the domestic soccer season.

The young Athboy man, who has been capped for the Republic of Ireland at under-age level, and has been impressing for the Saints this season.

Last evening he put in a highly impressive performance for St Pat's as they drew 0-0 with Sligo Rovers.

The SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier clash attracted a modest attendance to Richmond Park. However, the famous, old, but well-maintained ground, is sure to be packed on Sunday as Liam Buckley's St Pat's take on high-flying Cork City.

McGrath showed real skill and composure on the ball against a lively and inventive Sligo Rovers side - and invariably when he won possession possibilities opened up for the home side.

At under-age level McGrath played for Cherry Orchard but his talent was quickly noted and he was selected by Paul Doolin for the Republic of Ireland u-19 squad.

There was also considerable interest on McGrath from scouts attached to English-based clubs but he has, for the moment at least, opted to focus on studying in Maynooth College and the attainment of academic qualifications.

Jamie is the son of Kevin McGrath a highly qualified and competent coach and well known for his work with various soccer teams in Athboy over the years.

Last week Jamie McGrath was involved in the launch of the Third Level soccer competitions with another promising young Meath player Georgie Poynton. McGrath is studying in Maynooth as part of a scholarship arrangement between the SSE Airtricity League and the university.

The St Pat's v Cork City semi-final is part of a double header of cup games which will be shown by RTE 2 on Sunday.

Earlier in the day Derry City will take on Dundalk in the first of a double-header. Coverage of that game is due to start at 1.45.
