McNamara wins West of Ireland golf title

Headfort golfer Rory McNamara captured the prestigious West of Ireland Golf Championship title this afternoon with a 5 & 4 victory in the final against Muskerry’s Niall Gorey the County Sligo links at Rosses Point.

McNamara booked his place in the final following with a 4&3 win over Harry Diamond this morning.

McNamara, who is the reigning North of Ireland champion, finished the strokeplay section of the West of Ireland Championship as the leading qualifier following two very solid rounds in difficult conditions over the weekend.

That set up the Kells man for a third round clash with former winner Rory Leonard of Banbridge and following that McNamara was up against it as he faced defending champion Diamond from Belvoir Park in the semi-final.

The Meath man was too strong and was three up through 12  before closing out the 4&3 win.
