Omahonys manager ready for sundays big game

Navan O'Mahonys manager Davy Nelson believes that his team still has to produce its best form in this year's championship ahead of Sunday's eagerly-awaited SFC final against Donaghmore / Ashbourne at Pairc Tailteann, 3.30.

“There’s not much point in reaching your peak in the qualifying games, it’s all about making it to the knock-out phase first and then building on that,' commented in this week's Meath Chronicle.

“We improved in our last game in the group against Walterstown and then we picked it up again against Skryne in the quarter-final and Wolfe Tones in the semi-final.

“The Meath championship is a marathon and you need to be at your best in September and October, I hope that we are approaching our best now.

“Some people might have expected Wolfe Tones to win our semi-final, they were in a strong position against us early in the second-half, but we were delighted with the way the players reacted and that was important,” stated the manager.

And what about the challenge that Donaghmore / Ashbourne will pose?

Will the fact that they are first-time finalists make any difference, will the fact that O’Mahonys will be expected to win place any extra pressure on the players or manager?

“Firstly, it’s good to see a club like Donaghmore / Ashbourne in a senior final, they will be one of the forces in Meath football for the future,” he suggested.

“We played them here in Navan in the league this year (A FL Div 1), but it has no relevance at this stage.

“The senior football championship final is different to any other game, our expereince in finals can be an advantage for us if we use our experience properly.

“This is a finely balanced game, there are no obvious weaknesses on the Donaghmore/Ashbourne team, but they can be beaten and it will be up to us to do that if we want to keep the Keegan Cup in Navan on Sunday evening,” he concluded.
