513 housing unit plan for Enfield shot down

Plans for a major new 513 unit housing development for Enfield have been shot down by Bord Pleanala.

A planning application by Hayfield Homes Ltd for the development at the ring road, on lands to the north of the R148 and to the west of New Road, Johnstown, Enfield have been refused by the planning board.

The refusal was on the grounds that it is located in lands not zoned for development under the current 2012-2019 County Development plan.

The proposal was for 304 houses and 209 apartments, along with a childcare facility and associated site works. The application had gone straight to Bord Pleanala for consideration as it has been deemed a strategic housing development .

Cllr Noel French welcomed the decision saying local infrastructure is under pressure from water to community facilities - all of which are needed before any other major development takes place in Enfield.

"I would also like to see enterprise and jobs being made available for Enfield so people do not have to face a commute morning and evening.

“Such a huge housing development will have a major impact on community facilities, sewerage and water services."
