McGuinness in Rome for EU celebrations

Mairead McGuinness MEP, Vice-President of the European Parliament, attended official events for the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome on Saturday, alongside EU leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Taoiseach Enda Kenny, and the presidents of the EU Institutions.

'In 1957, the Treaties of Rome laid the foundations for what is the European Union today. As we celebrate the very foundation of the EU and the 60 years of peace it achieved, we can also reflect on where we are and where we want to go. The EU is a work in project, that we must keeping working to improve our unity, in keeping with our values and with hope for the future,' the Midlands North West MEP said.

EU leaders also had the opportunity to adopt a declaration on the Future of Europe, which aims to launch a debate on the possible future directions for the EU.
