Committee members at the new playground

Fun time again for Kells kids

The newly refurbished playground at the Fair Green in Kells opened this week to the delight of children and parents in the town and surrounding areas.
The brand new, modern facility, adjacent to the Garda station, has been completed two weeks ahead of plan.
According to Cllr Sarah Reilly everyone in the town is delighted with the speed and completion of the project.
“Kells now has the most modern and spacious playground in the county. This is great news for the town.
“The committee’s aim was to give children a unique, fun, interactive, accessible facility that encourages developmental play and by all reports we have achieved this result,” she said.
Ken Murray, who is Chairman of Kells Local Heroes, also expressed his delight at the pace in completing the project.
“This is a fantastic new facility for Kells. The playground, which is disability friendly and is decorated with a Book of Kells theme, has more items than the other playgrounds in Meath,  thanks to the amount of space it occupies.
“We are really grateful to the commitment given to this project by Meath County Council.”
Work on modernising the existing and somewhat dated playground commenced in mid-April.
It followed a series of meetings at which a number of local community groups clubbed together to make the project come to life.
They included Kells Local Heroes, The Special Hands Activity Group, Kells Tennis Club, the 5th Meath Scouts Kells and Cllr Reilly who contributed her personal discretionary fund to the budget.
An art competition also took place in local schools in which children were asked to paint their own vision of the planned playground.
An official opening day party is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.
