Heros journey retreat through storytelling

Drogheda based NGO, Development Perspectives says applications are open for their life changing “Hero’s Journey” programme. The three day retreat takes place at the Gyreum Ecolodge in Co Sligo from Friday 17th until Sunday 19th  April and centres on Joseph Campbell’s “Monomyth” theory. The programmes designers, including internationally renowned facilitator Carmine Rodi Falanga, guide participants along their own personal journey through the medium of storytelling over the course of the weekend. Places are limited for this inspirational programme and interested parties are encouraged to apply early to www.DevelopmentPerspectives.ie to avoid disappointment.

Joseph Campbell’s “Monomyth” theory suggests that the most ancient metaphor in the history of mankind is called 'The Hero's Journey”. It is present in the myths and legends of all cultures, from the most ancient tales up until the modern models represented in contemporary movies and novels. Why is it so powerful? Because it tells our story. It speaks about our journeys, our challenges, our live and our death. It speaks of heroes, allies and enemies. Of love and treachery. Of learning, transformation and the tests we must overcome throughout our journey.

Development Perspectives “Hero's Journey” begins on Friday 17th at 5pm when participants will be greeted by facilitators at the Gyreum Ecolodge in Corlisheen, Castlebaldwin, Co Sligo. Introductions, a presentation of the programme and a dinner together will follow to prepare group members for the Journey which lies ahead. After an overnight stay at the stunning Ecolodge participants will dedicate a whole day free from external influences, switching off mobile phones and all communication devices.

Saturday’s journey starts with an adventurous voyage in to the surrounding natural environment, followed by group discussions about the things and people which are important in participant’s lives. To increase the experience it will be recommended, but not enforced, to fast for the 24 hours of Saturday’s Journey. Water and tea will be readily available for participants throughout the fast and facilitators will have access to Internet and phone in case of emergency.

On Saturday night participants will be encouraged to be at one with nature and spend the night in the forest surrounding the Ecolodge armed only with a rudimentary shelter. This is an opportunity for personal reflection about the experiences thus far with the programme and preparation for Sunday morning’s Dreamstar Council. The council involves participants recalling the dreams of the night before and weaving them in a collective story. Once council has concluded participants will dine together for one last time and share their experiences of the programme before departing later that day.
