Clocks go back this weekend

There will be an extra hour in bed for everyone this coming weekend as the clocks go back by an hour on Sunday morning, hastening the arrival of official winter time.

Winter time will officially commence at 1am this Sunday, 26th October, and clocks and watches should be put back one hour at that time.

As the northern hemisphere once again again tilts away from the sun, and longer summer days give way to the cold and dark of winter, our clocks are put back by an hour, effectively bringing forward the onset of darker evenings.

Many people, however, now want to see that change, claiming it is detrimental on a number of fronts. Campaigners lobbying for a change for more than 40 years say leaving the clocks as they are could help reduce road deaths, improve mental and physical health and result in more economic activity.

They also argue that leaving the clocks as they are could even help those suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
