Navan home badly damaged by fire

A blaze badly damaged a home in Navan at the weekend.

The fire broke out in the hallway of a terraced house at Connolly Avenue on the Trim Road in Navan in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for Meath County Council has confirmed that the house was unoccupied at the time, but the family who live in the house were subsequently forced to leave the property due to extensive interior damage.

Significant smoke and scorch damage is visible on the exterior of the house, stretching up to the soffit with minor damage to the front door of an adjoining house.

The blaze broke out at 6am and was fought by two crews from Navan Fire Service.

Firefighters remained at the scene for a total of two hours but some of this time was spent waiting for the ESB to cut power to the property, according to Meath County Council.

The blaze at Connolly Avenue coincided with a major power outage in parts of Navan town on Sunday morning. A spokesperson for ESB confirmed, however, that the power outage and the house fire were not related.

Gardaí are continuing their investigations into the outbreak. They have asked anyone who witnessed the fire between 6am and 6.30am to contact Navan Garda Station on (046) 903 6100.
