ISPCA Chief Inspector Dowling with Iggy.

There's an iguana in my flowerbed!

A resident of Kilcock got a fright on Thursday afternoon when she popped out to the washing line only to spot a 75cm long lizard in her flowerbed. Initially unsure if the reptile was real or a toy, the householder contacted the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCC). Chief inspector Conor Dowling was dispatched to the scene and found the animal was very much the real thing. "There was a green iguana just sitting in the flowerbed," said Mr Dowling. "It was very cold by the time I arrived and hadn't moved in some time. Iguanas are cold-blooded and cannot be active when appropriate external heat is not available," he added. The lizard, nicknamed 'Iggy' by rescuers, was quickly removed and whisked away to a warm vivarium for some much-needed heat. It is thought that Iggy is a pet that escaped and anybody with information as to its owner is asked to contact the ISPCA on (043) 332 5035. Inspector Dowling added: "Iggy appeared to be in good condition with healthy skin colour. If we can locate the rightful owner, it should be possible to reunite them, though we may have to check on the security of the housing!"
