A woman who had her handbag snatched in Navan had her purse returned to her after a good Samaritan neighbour tracked down the culprit.

Last Monday night, 22nd August, at around 8.15pm, a woman was walking along the Trim Road in the town after being followed from an ATM machine by a lone male.

This man snatched the woman's purse on the road and raced away. However, a local resident helped trace the culprit for her and a man was arrested in a nearby industrial estate.

The Lithuanian national, who is in his mid-20s, appeared in court yesterday (Tuesday) where he was charged with theft.

Elsewhere, a Lithuanian man will appear before Navan Court on 14th September charged with the theft of a Blackberry phone and cash from the purse of a woman at The Palace in Navan also on Monday night.

Gardaí arrested two men after viewing CCTV of the scene. The other male, also Lithuanian, has not yet been charged.

At Bru na Habhainn on the Slane Road in Navan, a man in his 40s was arrested and charged with criminal damage and is accused of throwing a flower pot through the window of an empty apartment at around 2.40am in the early hours of Saturday morning, 20th August.

Earlier that night, a man was arrested in connection with a drive-off from a petrol station at Cannon Row in Navan.

At around 10.40pm, a black Audi A4 filled up with €55 worth of petrol before speeding off without paying. Gardaí were alerted and the car was stopped in the Donaghmore area.

Earlier that same day, a white Ford Transit was reported stolen from a house in Blackcastle Demesne. Gardaí are appealing for information on the 1997 Offaly-registered van, which has yet to be recovered.

In the early hours of the next day, 21st August, shortly after midnight, a man returned to his home in Priory Grove, Johnstown, and spied an intruder on his stairs.

The man stayed outside as the burglar helped himself to an iPhone and a sum of cash.

The occupant of the house, who was looking through the glass at the front door, said he could only identify a male, who then left through patio doors at the rear of the house. It is thought he entered the house through an open window as there were no signs of forced entry.

At Kilcarn Court on Wednesday 17th August, between 8am and 2.20pm, a silver Dell laptop, a Sony 36-inch flat-screen television and a Garmin sat nav were stolen from a house after a small window was thought to have been left open.

Finally, at Balrath Woods, the next day, Thursday 18th, a Toyota Starlet parked in the area had a window smashed sometime between 2.30pm and 3.45pm but, despite the daylight hours, there were no witnesses to the incident.
