Second year students of Beaufort College were visited by the CSI Students' Bus, organised by STEPS and Engineers Ireland last week. The young investigators took on the role of CSI detective with enthusiasm and energy which gained much praise from the co-ordinators, Sue McGrath and Kate Cannon.
The first task of students was to learn how to analyse data, crack codes and detect patterns from everyday items. The young investigators then learned about the value of finger printing and its use in criminal investigations.
Each student studied their own fingerprints for specific details which make their prints unique. Activities such as fingerprint and powder analysis techniques which will develop the students analytical and problem solving skills were all included in the event.
The experience highlighted the importance of mathematics and engineering in everyday life for the students. Beaufort College extends thanks to STEPS and Engineers Ireland for the opportunity to participate in Engineers Week.
The CSI Workshop took place in Beaufort College on Monday, 14th February, as part of Engineer's Week 2011. The bus also visited Gormanston College as part of the week-long event.
The week-long series of activities across the country and in Meath was run by Engineers Ireland, the representative voice of the engineering profession in this country, and is focused on creating a positive awareness about engineering in Ireland.
