Gardai in Athboy are investigating the circumstances of a fatal fire at a house on Connaught Street in the town on St Patrick's Night.

The fire was discovered by Gardai from Athboy when they observed fire and smoke coming from a building on Connaught St just after 11.30pm on the 17th March, according to the Garda Press Office. The fire brigade attended the scene and the body of a 47-year man was discovered in the building.

Meath County Council said that two units of its Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident. One house was destroyed in the blaze and damage has been caused to two adjoining houses.

"It is with deep regret that the council confirms that one person was fatally injured in the blaze," spokesperson Bill Sweeney said.

"The council would like to take this opportunity to extend its sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased," he added.

The scene is being preserved by An Garda Siochana for technical examination.

Witnesses are asked to contact the Gardai in Kells on (046) 928 0820, the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
