Sports and wellness all part of the Kaleidoscope experience
Laughter yoga, tug-of-war, croquet, a daily 3k run, and even welly-throwing competitions are all part of the Sports and Wellness programme at Ireland’s family-focused music and arts festival Kaleidoscope this year.
The carnival of colour and fun that is Kaleidoscope was the festival hit of the summer last year with a capacity crowd in attendance at Russborough House, Blessington, Co Wicklow. As music lovers young and old once again ready themselves for 26-28 June, Kaleidoscope are pleased to announce that their vast array of sporting activities means dancing to headline acts The Divine Comedy and Basement Jaxx (DJ set) won’t be the only way to have all the family up and at ‘em over the weekend.
In line with Kaleidoscope’s family friendly philosophy, providing entertainment for all ages is a priority for organisers – but this doesn’t just stop at the exciting music and arts line-up taking centre stage this June. Kaleidoscope are proud to encourage a healthy and balanced approach to living to all attendees and are the only music festival to have incorporated a sports and wellness programme to festivities.
A sense of adventure is also paramount to the Kaleidoscope experience. For those who are brave at heart, zoom through the air on the mobile zipline, clamber to new heights on the climbing wall, and see how well you can shoot on target as you get to grips with a bow and arrow and the ancient art of archery – but make sure you don’t have your lunch before you head zorbing!
Kick-start your day with a 3k run taking place on-site bright and early on Saturday and Sunday morning, with a warm-up session on the Front Lawn to stretch out any leg muscles that might be a little sore from dancing the night away the day before! Get a cardio workout with a difference with the GoGym team who are offering GoDance, an aerobic dance workout to challenge the mind and body, GoPump, a rhythmic cardio and core workout, and GoFit, a HIIT session that will certainly have you working up a sweat. If you’ve a more leisurely approach to getting active, take in the best of the Irish countryside with a family cycle on the nearby Greenway, hiring bikes from the festival.
Elsewhere, a little chill out time is always a good idea whether you’re a giddy child or the parent running after them; morning meditation offered on-site will help you ease the family into the day. Well-being is certainly a central part of Kaleidoscope’s ethos, with the festival also offering Tai-Chi in the Walled Garden and Yoga classes on the Front Lawn. And don’t worry if you’re prone to a fit of the giggles as you attempt to achieve some zen in your life; Kaleidoscope’s laughter yoga has got you covered too!
Just as taking some time out has benefits for the mind, making music together is also a brilliant way of stimulating the brain of children and adults alike. Why not head along to one of the many drumming workshops taking place across the festival site to reap the rewards of battering out rhythms on the drums? Up to 100 people will come together for the mass participation drumming session in the Zozimus area, while smaller group sessions will take place over the weekend. Meanwhile, exercise your vocal cords with the Lalala Choir’s drop-in singing workshops.
With the mind looked after with meditation and music, get into the competitive spirit at the family sports day in the Sports Field; it will be a trip down memory lane for parents as the family compete in school yard favourites such as the three-legged race, slow bike race and the egg and spoon race, while the football fanatics in the family will get the chance to play soccer matches and hone their skills at rugby and Gaelic coaching sessions.
