Gardai arrested over 3,900 drivers for Driving While Intoxicated offences in the first half of 2023. With the August Bank Holiday weekend upon us, the country's Roads Policing Units will be out in force adding to the already 24,000 checkpoints mounted this year with a particular emphasis placed on detecting speeding and drink and drug drivers.

At a special Garda briefing in Navan today, Garda Chris Lynch of Delvin Roads Policing Unit explained how a drug driving test is carried out at a roadside checkpoint.
