GOLF CLASSIC Holiday fund boosted by Trim outing

The Meath Ladies holiday fund received a significant boost on Friday as their sold out golf classic at Knightsbrook Hotel and Golf Resort in Trim attracted hundreds of players for a hugely entertaining day.

Striking while the iron was hot off the back of their All-Ireland SFC success, Meath Ladies Co Board made hay in glorious sunshine as supporters and sponsors took the opportunity to enjoy a round of golf and show their support for Eamonn Murray and his team.

"It was a great day out and brilliantly organised. We were delighted to get out and show our support for the Meath Ladies and congratulate them on what was a magnificent year," said golfer Mark Melia.

"What the Meath Ladies achieved by winning the All-Ireland Intermediate and Senior titles within six months of each other is huge and they have given the whole county a huge lift.

"The support for the team here today has been excellent and it just proves the high regard the girls and their management are held in. It's just a pity my golf didn't get anywhere near the lofty heights the Meath ladies have set, but it was a great day nonetheless," concluded Melia.

Not known as a man to swing a golf club, manager Eamonn Murray was on course from early morning to greet all the golfers as they arrived and he was joined by players Stacey Grimes, Alison O'Sullivan and Emma Duggan.

"This event is a great chance for us to be here to meet the golfers and all the sponsors and thank them for their wonderful support throughout the year," Murray told the Meath Chronicle.

"The messages we have received over the last few weeks have been amazing. I have received letters from every corner of the country, from young and old, thanking us for what we have done this year.

"These girls are an inspiration to every young child in the country. They are amazing role models and it is great to hear them talked about as household names now.

"They have worked extremely hard to get to where they are today and they have enjoyed the celebrations. Today's fundraiser is about trying to raise a few Euro to go on a team holiday.

"They are an amazing bunch, always having fun, always having a laugh and that is the secret to their success. They work just as hard, maybe even harder, as every other team in the country, but they mix it with fun and do it with a smile on their face. A team holiday would be a great reward for them and this event today will go someway towards covering the cost of that.

"Our attentions are already turning to next year. We have a huge target on our backs now and we are the team everyone will want to beat, but we will welcome the challenge.

"We are where we want to be, we will be playing against the best teams in the country every time we go out. That is where every player aspires to be and we are hopefully inspiring a new generation of youngsters to play football and get to where these girls are today," concluded the manager.

Friday's golf produced some magnificent scoring with former Meath player Joe Sheridan joining forces with his brother Brian, comedian Rory O'Connor of Rory's Stories and his dad Mick to scoop the top prize.

As part of their fundraising drive Meath Ladies are also holding a car draw for a Peugeot 3008. Tickets are €60 and are available from all committee members.
