Christy Dignam - 'The Man Who Stayed Alive'
Aslan singer producing a solo album as a legacy
Aslan legend Christy Dignam will release his legacy solo album 'The Man Who Stayed Alive' to the world in autumn 2021. In order to seed fund the production of the album, to ensure Christy and his family can benefit from the process and to march the album into the number 1 spot in the charts, an opportunity for fans to ‘Back Christy’ and be a part of the legacy piece of work has been launched.
Ten per cent of all proceeds raised from the campaign will be donated to ARC Cancer Support Services, a charity close to Christy’s heart.
Born in Dublin in 1960, Christy Dignam found his vocation to become a singer watching David Bowie perform ‘Life On Mars’ at the age of thirteen. Over more than three decades he and his band Aslan have shared dizzy highs, crushing lows and several near death experiences, to emerge as one of Ireland’s best-loved entertainers and people. Along the way Christy and Aslan have written hit songs that, as the comedian Tommy Tiernan observed, ‘have become part of the Irish DNA’.
This campaign has been set up to invest in Christy, who has become a legend in his own lifetime. His magnetic presence on a stage, unique voice, a rollercoaster life story of successes and tragedies, combined with his raw honesty, secured him a special place in the hearts of many. In 2013 he was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called amyloidosis. Tragically, this is a terminal illness.
In mid-2020, while undergoing chemotherapy for his cancer, Christy devastatingly lost his father to Covid-19, as well as his beloved dog Jack, who had been his constant companion for 12 years. This run of tragedies would break the spirit of so many but, still, Christy soldiers on.
To lift his spirits, Christy reached out to his friend, award winning writer/producer Don Mescall, who had previously written the number 1 single ‘Too late for Hallelujah’ for Christy and Aslan in 2012. He proposed creating a solo album to leave as a legacy piece and, despite his health issues, the creative process began. A group of interested individuals from the business, media and production industries then came together to put a process in place to raise the funds needed to make this legacy album happen. The making of the album titled The Man Who Stayed Alive is now in progress, thanks to a seeding round of support from the initial 'Album Angels' and due for release in the Autumn.
Commenting on the importance to him of the creation of this piece of work and the support of the fans who are making it happen, Christy says: "I would just like to thank everyone involved in the production of this very special album. I am humbled and overwhelmed by the response we have gotten. From the bottom of my heart I thank you all.’
The first single, which is entitled ‘High’, from the forthcoming album is available to stream or download.
