ATHLETICS Meath one-two in 400m hurdle

There was Meath one-two in the 400m hurdle at the Northern Ireland & Ulster Championships in Belfast on Saturday as Karen Dunne and Deirdre Murray dominated the event.

Bohermeen athlete Dunne, who holds no fewer than 10 senior club records, was in top form at the Northern Ireland & Ulster championships at the Mary Peters track last Saturday.

The famous venue has seen huge investment for athletics over the years, with the original six-lane track replaced by a new eight-lane fast track and a viewing grandstand.

The Bohermeen athlete lined up in the senior 400m hurdles final on Saturday against fellow Meath athlete Deirdre Murray from Na Fianna.

The field had to contend with the cross winds at two points, but the field was led home by the two athletes from the Royal County with Murray taking the title in 59.33 and Dunne in second place in a time of 61.37 a new personal best and a Bohermeen club record.

Third place went to Laura Frey of Lagan Valley in 64.03.

This season Dunne has set the club 200m and 400m records and ran her fastest 100m in six years.

In June she was in action at the AAI games at Morton Stadium where she produced a strong performance running 25.85 to secure third place in her heat in the 200m behind Kate O'Connell (Lucan Harriers) and Rhianna McCarthy (Crusaders).

The following day she clocked 64.88 to secure fourth place in the 400m hurdles.

She will return to the Mary Peters track this weekend to contest the multi-events with one eye on the medals on one on setting new personal bests and club records.

Last week Dunne was in action at the Summer Games in Carlow IT where she impressed when winning the 400 metres.

On that occasion Dunne set a new personal best and Bohermeen AC club record time on 57.28 seconds to finish clear of DSD's Molly Hourihan with Donore Harriers' Caoimhe Mackey back in third.
