Permanent accommodation for Stepping Stones School in Maynooth

The Stepping Stones Special School currently based in temporary accommodation at Kilcloon will be relocated to permanent accommodation in  Maynooth.

Following years of campaigning, it was confirmed this morning that the school will be relocating to the former post primary building in Maynooth

Minister Thomas Byrne who warmly welcomed the news, said his colleague, Minister Norma Foley had informed him that Kildare Wicklow ETB has given its consent for the use of a portion of the former schol in Maynooth by Stepping Stones Special School.

“The Department of Education will now proceed with making arrangements for refurbishing the building for Stepping Stones and is continuing to liaise with the school in this regard. The aim is to have the building ready for occupation for September 2021.

“This is super news for the entire school community of Stepping Stones who have campaigned for years to find suitable permanent accommodation to meet their needs.

“This government has always been committed to providing the best possible opportunities for the students and staff of Stepping Stones in Kilcloon. As a local TD, I have actively worked in both opposition and in government  to bring about a positive outcome for Stepping Stones.

“The entire school community, particularly the principal and teachers need to be recognised for their incredible work over the years. They have provided a very positive and engaging learning space for their students despite a number of practical and environmental constraints. The local community in Kilcloon have also been hugely supportive to the school over the years, often fundraising to keep services open at Stepping Stones.

“Today’s announcement  marks a new chapter in the history of Stepping Stones school and I want to wish them every good wish as they now transition into their new permanent home,” concluded Minister Byrne.
