Meath minor player fatally injured
Meath GAA was plunged into mourning this morning when the tragic news emerged of the death of minor football star Liam Tolan. The deceased was fatally injured in a car accident last night only hours after he had played for the Royal County in the Leinster MFC against Offaly at Navan's Pairc Tailteann. The Skryne player scored a point in that game and made the opening for Meath's goal as his side lost out to an injury-time point for Offaly. The accident happened near Kilbrew, Ashbourne, the car crashed into a ditch. It is understood that another Meath minor player had been dropped home and that the accident occurred subsequently. The driver and a second passenger were not injured. The road is currently closed for technical examination and diversions are in place. Liam Tolan was a student at Ashbourne CC and earlier this year helped Meath to the Leinster VEC inter-county title where they beat Wicklow in the decider at Parnell Park by 2-15 to 0-6 last February. It is anticipated that Meath GAA Co Committee may postpone some events which are scheduled for this coming week. Tuesday night's u-16 finals which are scheduled for Pairc Tailteann, Simonstown and Trim have been postponed as a mark of respect.
