Adam Flanagan breaks clear from Kiltale’s William Harnan for Killyon/Boardsmill during the MHL A final at Trim on Saturday.

Combined side claim minor title

Killyon/Boardsmill took the MHL A title at Trim on Saturday when they out-scored Kiltale in what turned out to be a disappointing game. That suggestion might be deemed a bit wide of the mark, not unlike KIllyon/Boardsmill who managed 19 wides for the hour as they wasted chance after chance. However, the game produced a low-scoring first-half as Kiltale made the most of limited opportunities while Killyon / Boardsmill ended the half with eight wides as they laboured for fluency. Kiltale hit the front inside 60 seconds when Anthony Forde split the posts, but Killyon / Boardsmill wasted at least five clear-cut chances in as many minutes as they struggled for accuracy. Kiltale absorbed a lot of pressure and increased their lead in the 15th minute when Tiernan Mahady converted a free. Those five wides was all Killyon/Boardsmill had to show for their possession in that opening quarter and the radar was off for the remainder of the half until they finished with a mini-flourish which earned parity. Mahady added another free in the 22nd minute which gave Kiltale a 0-3 to 0-0 lead and it took another five minutes before Killyon / Boardsmill made the scoreboard. Niall Weir converted a free and then sent over from play before Jim Bird drew the sides level in the 30th minute which left it 0-3 apiece at the interval. Killyon resumed smartly and had three more points on the scoreboard for the third-quarter as they took the wide-tally to 15 with some more woeful finishing. Fergal Flattery (pictured), Vivan Dwyer and Weir hit the target for that 0-6 to 0-3 third-quarter lead and as the pace of the game picked up, the combined side maintained the initiative with another three points. Adam Gannon, Thomas Raleigh and Ger Foley were the marksmen while Mahady claimed Kiltale’s lone score for the second-half. This was a good result for Killyon/Boardsmill as they had lost to Kiltale in the league phase of the competition. They learned from that experience and were relieved to escape with the trophy on this occasion following a performance which had the team officials in a very frustrated mood on the sideline.
