Kells Pink Ribbon Walk hands over €100,000 to Action Breast Cancer
The Kells Pink Ribbon Walk committee handed over a cheque for €100,000 to Action Breast Cancer at a presentation ceremony on Sunday in the Headfort Arms Hotel. Over 600 runners and walkers participated in the first annual Kells Pink Ribbon Walk, which took place around Girley Bog Eco Walk on 12th September last. "The walk created an incredible spirit throughout the whole community, from business people, individuals, schoolchildren, friends and families - all working together with a common objective, to raise funds and support all those touched by breast cancer," said walk chairperson Penny McGowan. RTE's Bryan Dobson, the patron of the Kells Pink Ribbon Walk, presented prizes to the fastest runners on the day, as well as to those who raised the most in sponsorship monies. Thanks were extended to Drewstown House, Bryan Dobson, Action Breast Cancer, Kells Chamber of Commerce, the Headfort Arms Hotel, the Meath Chronicle, the team of men who did so much physical work on the bog, all of the stewards and volunteers on the day, all the generous corporate sponsors, MC Michael Farrelly, singer Matthew Gilsenan, and personal trainers, Sidney Brito and Liam Newman. "Most of all, I'd like to thank all of our walkers who participated in the event and helped to make it such a wonderful success, as well as everyone who sponsored a participant," she added. On behalf of the Irish Cancer Society, CEO John McCormack said: "I am thrilled with the tremendous success of the first ever Kells Pink Ribbon Walk. I wish to congratulate Penny and her enthusiastic team of organisers for the hard work and dedication they put into making this walk such a success. To have raised €100,000 for Action Breast Cancer (ABC) is a huge achievement and a very significant contribution to the society." The date for next year's Kells Pink Ribbon Walk findraising event has already been set - Saturday 11th September 2010.
