Costello takes Meath title at Claremont
Star of the Sea athlete and former European Junior 1500m champion Colin Costello had to use his experience to edge out Bohermeen's Darragh Rennicks in a thrilling finish to the 800m at the Meath Senior Championships at Claremont Stadium on Wednesday of last week. Both athletes were rarely far from each other throughout the race with Costello taking the title on the line with both athletes clocking up one minute, 58 seconds in a dramatic finish. The masters race was incorporated into the same event and Fr Murphy's Michael Priest rolled back the years to win that category. Rennicks ended a busy week when he took silver in a u-23 800m race at Kilkenny on Sunday. Trim athlete Shane Aston threw a new personal best of 43.76m in the javelin to earn himself a silver medal at the Leinster Junior u-20 and u-23 Athletics Championships at Kilkenny on Sunday. This represented a superb achievement for the young Trim thrower who is eligible for this age group for two more seasons. Earlier this month Aston earned a place on the Leinster team for the Tailteann Games Inter-provincial schools competition. Aston is the first member of the club in many years to earn selection for the Tailteann Games. His training colleague Andrew Lynam finished third in both the junior hammer and the shot putt at Kilkenny. Derek Croal posted his best run in the Bob Heffernan 5km Road Race when he clocked 15 minutes 36 seconds and was placed 10th overall. David O'Connell also posted a personal best in the event. Linda Gunning took the women's o-50 title. Aspiring young Bohermeen athletes, aged nine to 12, took part in the Leinster Juvenile Championships at Claremont Stadium on Saturday. Jack Hilliard and Cian McBride combined to win the u-11 long jump club title and both will represent Bohermeen in the national finals at Templemore. Cian Egenton and Ciaran Morgan were second and third in the boys u-12 high jump. Molly Fitzgerald was unlucky not to take a medal when she was fourth in the girls u-12 60m sprint final but she still goes through to the national finals. The final round of the 2011 Mullingar Harriers league took place at Belvedere House last week. In the W50 class Marian Buckley (Trim) went one better than last season by taking the top prize in her age group. In the M55 grade Sean Sheehy (Trim) continued his progress from the early season with third place. The Braveheart 5km will take place on Friday 17th June. Trim AC has set a course which will take the runners along the historic river Boyne past some of the finest medieval monuments in Ireland which provided the backdrop for many of the scenes in the film Braveheart.
