50 GPs share almost €10m GMS payout
ALMOST 50 doctors practising in Meath received a total of €9.84 million in medical card and practice support payments under the General Medical Services Payments Scheme in 2006, according to the latest statistics.
More than half of the GPs in the scheme were paid in excess of €200,000. The biggest payment in Meath - €484,280 - was made to Drs Murphy and Stewart at the Mosney Health Centre in east Meath, which caters for non-national asylum seekers. The payments are exclusive of income from private patients and employer group schemes.
The doctors were paid fees in addition to practice support payments (used to pay the cost of nursing, secretarial staff and IT facilities).
Nationwide, over €2 billion was paid to 5,811 doctors, pharmacies, dentists and optometrists/opthalmologists in 2006 through the Primary Care Reimbursement Service, with €681 million of this in fees alone for services (including dispensing) delivered.
