New women’s shed officially opens in Bettystown

A new community initiative aimed at bringing women together in a welcoming and supportive environment has officially opened its doors on the east coast.

The East Coast Women Together Shed was formally launched in Bettystown on Wednesday, 13th May, marking the beginning of what organisers hope will become a vibrant hub for women of all ages and backgrounds across the area.

Chairperson of the newly established shed, local Sinne Fein Cllr Maria White, said she was “blown away” by the level of support and progress achieved in such a short period of time.

In just seven weeks, organisers established a committee, held public meetings, secured insurance and a venue, affiliated with the Women’s Shed of Ireland Association and attracted more than 50 members.

“It is a testament to the teamwork and dedication of this committee that we opened our doors within seven weeks of committing to this Women’s Shed,” Cllr White said.

“Based on the feedback at the public meetings we knew there was a great level of interest in the community so we focused our energies on creating a safe, inviting space for women of all ages and backgrounds.”

The group is based in the local LMETB building in Bettystown, where unused classrooms have been transformed into workshop and social spaces for activities including arts, chats, tea mornings and a book club.

Cllr White also thanked local businesses for their support and donations, particularly women-led businesses that have volunteered to host workshops and events.

The shed already has a packed programme planned before the summer break, beginning with a watercolour workshop hosted by committee member and local artist Susanne Deasy.

Organisers say the long-term goal is to create a sustainable community where members can support one another and eventually lead workshops themselves.

While membership is currently at capacity, those interested in joining the waiting list can contact the group by email at eastcoastwomentogether@outlook.com.
