Athboy Community School’s second year footballers etched their names into the history books with a remarkable victory over Longwood in the North Leinster Schools 2nd Year's Football final at Dunganny on Wednesday.
Athboy CS burst out of the blocks, setting the tone early and racing into a three-point lead with confident, attacking football.
Their sharp movement and clinical finishing put Longwood under immediate pressure. However, Longwood responded in kind, demonstrating their quality and resilience by battling back to take the lead midway through the first half.
At a crucial stage, Athboy found themselves under sustained pressure, and it was goalkeeper and joint captain Luke Coyne who rose to the occasion, producing a series of outstanding saves keeping his side firmly in the contest.
Inspired by this resistance, Athboy surged forward once more. A well-taken goal shifted momentum, and they quickly followed it up with a second, reclaiming the lead heading into half-time. That double strike gave Athboy renewed confidence and a firm foothold in the match.
The second-half belonged to Athboy CS. Displaying excellent teamwork, discipline and attacking flair, they took control of proceedings and never allowed Longwood back into contention.
Wave after wave of attacks resulted in a series of superbly worked goals, showcasing the team’s skill and determination.
