Meath County Council wins national LAMA award for Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway
Meath County Council won the award for 'Best Transformative Capital Project' for the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway at the 2026 LAMA All Ireland Community and Council Awards.
The award recognises the significant positive impact the greenway has had on communities across Meath and the wider region—enhancing recreation, active travel, tourism, and local wellbeing.
Developed along a former rail corridor linking Navan to Kingscourt, the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway has transformed a previously disused line into a vibrant, high-quality walking and cycling route.
The LAMA Awards celebrate excellence in local government and honour projects that deliver real, meaningful improvements for communities. Meath County Council was nominated for four awards on the night overall with two of those being for community initiatives- Best Community Transport Initiative for Bus It to School and Best Green Sustainable Initiative for the Gaelic Woodland Project (with Carlow and Mayo County Council). Meath County Council was also nominated for a National Impact Award for its work on Age Friendly Ireland: National Technical Project.
At the March meeting of Meath County Council on Monday, Chief Executive Kieran Kehoe, congratulated all involved, paying tribute to the members for pushing the project from their side and also Director of Transport Martin Murray, Senior Executive Engineer David O'Reilly and the Council team for pushing it from the council side.
"It is a great asset as we all know, and is being heavily used. We intend to extend it and when you see the likes of Doughtys and the impact it has had- it is brilliant project and showcases what are doing, and can do here in Meath. It is great to get national recognition for it," said Mr Kehoe.
Cathaoirleach Wayne Harding also spoke of the knock on effects, highlighting that Doughty's in Wilkinstown had "cleaned up" in the Business and Tourism Awards. "It shows the importance of really well delivered greenways. Well done to everybody involved."
