Renewed call for redesign of junction in the centre of Robinstown village and for traffic calming measures
Fears for the safety of schoolchildren in Robinstown as well as local residents were expressed at a meeting of Navan Municipal Council last week.
The need for a redesign of the junction in the centre of the village and for traffic calming measures was raised by the Mayor of Navan, Cllr Padraig Fitzsimons, who said speeding traffic was causing a real danger in the area.
Cllr Fitzsimons called for safety measures to prevent speeding at Scoil Mhuire and the road, which runs through the village.
“The traffic is speeding through the village and along by the school. They may be slowing down but they are still travelling too fast. There are three estates in the village with young children, as well as the school and traffic calming is badly needed.
“We are now gong to have 30km speed limits around all schools but that isn't enough. We need a lot more than that to keep children safe.”
At the meeting Cllr Fitzsimons was told that the school and village were included in the list of requested works for traffic calming measures. There will now be traffic data collection along with a mobile speed detection device to assess the danger there.
“Local people will say they can see the speed every day with traffic flying by. The sooner all this happens the better because safety works are needed,” said Cllr Fitzsimons.
He asked if there was a reason that Scoil Mhuire was not on the safe routes to school?
Cllr Fitzsimons was told that the school has to be the driver of the safe routes to school application.
