'AI cartoons won't replace artists!'... Meath caricaturist warning how AI can impact on jobs across all industries

The new AI cartoon generator has seen the workload of one of Ireland's top caricature artists almost double recently as the trend highlights individualised portraits.

Award-winning artist Niall O'Loughlin has been inundated with support after his post on social media on Wednesday urged people to remember that flippant use of Artificial Intelligence can impact on jobs across all industries.

In the post he wrote: "Funny how some people can't stop sharing the AI caricature trend. Deadly, Love that, amazing.

He then gave examples on how an AI singer might replace vocalists, an AI radio presenter might clone the chat and personality or why book a wedding band when a playlist will do.

Niall presented soccer legend Pele with his portrait.

"Sure it's only a bit of fun, it's gas when it's not your livelihood. Trends are funny. Until your job becomes one."

The Dunboyne-based artist has since added that while AI can be great in certain areas, people also need to be careful when using it.

"People don't realise that you are giving away your facial recognition. I think AI can be good in certain instances but I think there is becoming a backlash against it too.

"I've been up against competition from AI images for years but I've never been busier.

"Often computer generator images are horrendous. And people love being in the moment, sitting in front of me being hand-drawn. And I love their reaction.

He said that his post has highlighted the fun of caricatures and people have turned to him wanting individualised portraits by professional artists.

"There are young artists out there after completing four years in college who will find it hard to get jobs because of AI. These are hugely talented individuals.

"But you know what, there have been threats before to our careers and there always will be - but the cream will always rise to the top and you will not beat human skill or talent

In the last number of years, Niall has become one of Ireland's foremost caricaturists and has been commissioned for portraits for celebrities such as Pele, Breaking Bad star Dean Norris and fellow Dunboyne artist and musician CMAT
