New safety initiative launched to protect vulnerable households during emergencies
A new community safety initiative aimed at protecting the county's most vulnerable residents during storms, power outages and other emergencies has been launched by Meath County Council in partnership with An Garda Síochána Meath Division, the HSE and Meath Partnership.
The Meath Community Preparedness Alliance is designed to support households that may be more at risk during adverse events such as severe storms, flooding or prolonged power outages, including older people, those living alone and individuals with mobility or health challenges.
Open to all residents of Co. Meath, the initiative is voluntary and confidential, and will allow emergency supports to be coordinated more effectively when severe weather or other incidents occur.
By registering, households can receive advance text alerts warning of severe weather or emergency situations, along with practical advice on how to prepare. Where an area is affected, welfare checks may also be carried out by phone or in person to ensure residents are safe and supported.
Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Cllr Wayne Harding, urged people who feel they may need additional help to consider signing up.
“Meath County Council, along with our partner agencies, is encouraging anyone who feels they may need extra support during an adverse event to seriously consider registering with this voluntary and confidential system,” he said.
“Our focus is on providing safety, reassurance and practical help, particularly during severe storms or prolonged power outages. If you know a family member, friend or neighbour who could benefit, please urge them to get in touch.”
Chief Executive of Meath County Council, Kieran Kehoe, said the initiative would strengthen community resilience across the county.
“Community preparedness strengthens resilience across the entire county. We want everyone in Meath to be safe and to know that support is available, ensuring no household is overlooked during severe weather or emergency situations,” he said.
He added that the Meath Community Preparedness Alliance would allow state agencies and local partners to coordinate and share information more efficiently, enabling timely and targeted assistance to those who need it most.
Residents who feel they may require additional support can register online for the Meath Community Preparedness Alliance. Information leaflets are also available at all Meath County Council area offices.
A paper registration form is available on request by emailing communitysafety@meathcoco.ie.
